Ethereum Foundation Adds Pascal Caversaccio to Board

Pascal Caversaccio, widely known online as pcaversaccio or pc, has joined the Ethereum Foundation board for an initial one-year term. The role is voluntary, and his appointment expands the board to four members alongside Aya Miyaguchi, Vitalik Buterin and Patrick Storchenegger. The change puts a contributor associated with security, privacy and cypherpunk values into the foundation’s highest oversight body.

The Ethereum Foundation board does not direct every application, company or protocol built on Ethereum. Ethereum remains an open network developed by many independent teams. The board instead sets the foundation’s vision, checks that management’s high-level strategies align with its values, protects the organization’s institutional purpose and ensures compliance as a Swiss foundation. That narrower but influential mandate makes the background of each board member important.

Who Pascal Caversaccio is

Caversaccio is a long-time Ethereum contributor and a co-founder and lead of SEAL 911, an emergency coordination initiative that helps projects respond to security incidents. He has also participated in the foundation’s Silviculture Society, which provides informal counsel on sustaining censorship resistance, open source development, privacy and security. Those roles place him at the intersection of technical defense and ecosystem norms.

He authored The Ethereum Cypherpunk Manifesto in 2024, adapting cypherpunk principles to the network’s contemporary challenges. A later essay focused on privacy and self-sovereignty. The significance of those writings is not that they become formal policy through his appointment. They provide a public record of the priorities and tradeoffs he is likely to raise when the board evaluates long-term direction.

Security experience is especially relevant because Ethereum’s risk surface extends far beyond the base protocol. Wallets, bridges, decentralized applications and custody systems can fail even when consensus continues normally. Incident response demands rapid coordination without turning an open ecosystem into a centrally controlled service. A board member familiar with that tension can help the foundation distinguish between useful support and authority it does not possess.

What the Ethereum Foundation board actually does

The board’s stated responsibilities include setting vision, overseeing alignment between management decisions and the foundation’s values, serving as a security council for the institution, and handling legal compliance. It is not a token-holder parliament, a protocol legislature or an executive committee for the entire ecosystem. That distinction prevents organizational governance from being mistaken for network governance.

Protocol changes still move through research, public specifications, client implementation, testing and broad coordination among independent actors. The foundation can fund work, convene contributors and communicate priorities, but it cannot make nodes adopt software by decree. Its influence is substantial because of its resources and history, yet Ethereum’s credible neutrality depends partly on those limits being visible.

Why board composition still matters

Formal power is only one form of influence. The board helps choose leadership, frame institutional strategy and decide how the foundation uses its attention. A member with deep security and privacy experience may ask different questions about grants, infrastructure, operational resilience and ecosystem support than someone whose background is primarily legal or managerial.

The current group combines several perspectives. Miyaguchi serves as president and has led the organization through years of ecosystem growth. Buterin brings founder-level technical and philosophical context. Storchenegger provides Swiss legal counsel. Caversaccio adds practical security coordination and an explicit cypherpunk orientation. Diversity of function can improve oversight if disagreements are surfaced rather than smoothed over.

The one-year initial term also creates a defined review point. It allows the foundation and Caversaccio to test how the role works without presenting the appointment as permanent. Because the position is voluntary, transparency about responsibilities and time commitments will matter. A respected name alone cannot substitute for a board process that produces clear decisions and accountability.

Security and privacy in Ethereum’s next phase

Ethereum’s roadmap increasingly involves scaling systems, account improvements, data availability work and stronger user protections. Each improvement can introduce new interfaces and dependencies. Security must therefore include protocol robustness, application safety, operational readiness and the ability to communicate during incidents. The board does not implement those systems, but it can ensure that the institution treats their risks as strategic rather than secondary.

Privacy raises a similarly broad challenge. Users need protection from unnecessary exposure, while developers and institutions operate under legal obligations that vary by jurisdiction. Technical privacy tools can preserve autonomy, but their design, funding and communication require care. A cypherpunk perspective can keep user rights visible while the board also considers compliance duties that attach to the foundation itself.

These priorities can reinforce each other. Privacy systems that are difficult to use may push people toward unsafe workarounds. Security systems that collect excessive data may protect one layer while weakening another. The most useful contribution from a security-focused board member may be to insist that the organization evaluates the full threat model, including social and institutional risks.

What comes next after the appointment

The appointment’s effect will be measured through decisions, not symbolism. Observers can watch whether the foundation provides clearer governance disclosures, supports security coordination, funds privacy research and explains how its values shape management choices. Not every outcome will be attributable to one director, and board deliberations may remain confidential where legal or personnel matters require it.

The Ethereum Foundation board has added a member whose work already spans incident response, privacy advocacy and institutional counsel. That strengthens the representation of security-minded cypherpunk values at the top of the organization without changing Ethereum’s decentralized development process. The practical test is whether Caversaccio’s one-year term helps the foundation turn those values into consistent stewardship, transparent priorities and durable support for the builders and users the institution exists to serve.
