Prediction Market Volume Hits $50.6B July Record

Combined prediction market volume across Kalshi, Polymarket and Polymarket US reached approximately $50.6 billion in July, an all-time monthly high. The total rose about 7.8% from June’s $46.95 billion, helped by heavy trading around the FIFA World Cup.

The record is significant, but the underlying data does not show uniform growth. Polymarket US volume increased 54% to $5 billion, while the main Polymarket platform contracted 26% to $7.9 billion. The balance implies that Kalshi accounted for the large majority of the combined total, although venue totals should be read with consistent definitions and reporting methods.

Open interest also moved in the opposite direction from monthly turnover late in the period. Across the three venues, it fell from about $2 billion at the start of July to roughly $1.2 billion by month-end after World Cup markets resolved. That gap illustrates why volume alone cannot describe the health or persistence of a prediction market.

What drove record prediction market volume

The World Cup ran from June 11 through July 19 and created a concentrated set of widely understood events. A Kalshi contract on the final between Spain and Argentina generated about $1.9 billion of volume, while a Polymarket contract on the tournament winner attracted roughly $4 billion.

Major sports events offer several features that support high turnover. They have fixed schedules, frequent information updates and clear resolution conditions. Participants can trade before and during a tournament as team performance, injuries and match results change expectations.

The World Cup also brought in users who may not regularly trade political, economic or crypto contracts. That broad audience helped raise volume, but it makes the next few months an important test. A temporary event can produce extraordinary activity without establishing a permanent baseline.

Volume and open interest measure different things

Trading volume counts the value of contracts exchanged over a period. The same position may contribute to volume multiple times as it changes hands. A fast-moving market can therefore generate large turnover even if the amount of capital remaining at risk is much smaller.

Open interest measures outstanding positions that have not yet been closed or resolved. Its decline from about $2 billion to $1.2 billion during July is consistent with tournament contracts settling and traders withdrawing or reallocating capital.

The two measures are not contradictory. High volume shows active trading; falling open interest shows that fewer positions remained open at the end. A durable market would ideally convert some event-driven users and liquidity into activity across new contract categories.

Venue shifts matter as much as the total

Polymarket US’s 54% monthly increase to $5 billion indicates that the regulated U.S.-facing venue gained activity. The main Polymarket platform’s 26% decline to $7.9 billion shows that growth was not simply shared across both versions of the brand.

Kalshi’s implied contribution was much larger than either Polymarket figure. That concentration makes venue-specific product design, market-making programs and regulatory access central to the industry’s trajectory. If most volume depends on one operator or one event class, the headline market size may be less diversified than it appears.

Comparisons also require caution because platforms can define volume differently. Incentives, fee structures, wash-trading controls and the treatment of closing trades can affect reported totals. Analysts should compare methodology alongside the headline number.

Why prediction markets matter for blockchain

Prediction markets aggregate views into prices that can be read as market-implied probabilities. Blockchain-based venues add transparent settlement, auditable contract balances and programmable collateral. Those features can broaden access and allow developers to integrate market probabilities into other applications.

Transparency does not guarantee accuracy. A market price reflects the capital and information of its participants, subject to liquidity, contract wording and trading constraints. Thin markets can move sharply on small orders. Ambiguous resolution criteria can create disputes even when the underlying event seems clear.

Centralized regulated venues and blockchain-based platforms therefore solve different parts of the problem. One may emphasize legal access, surveillance and fiat integration; another may emphasize global availability and transparent onchain settlement. July’s data suggests that both models can attract substantial activity, but under different jurisdictional conditions.

Regulation remains a central risk

More than a dozen state regulators have challenged Kalshi and Polymarket over whether some event contracts amount to unlicensed gambling. The platforms and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission have argued that federal oversight can preempt state action in relevant cases.

The legal outcome could determine which contracts platforms may list and where users can access them. Sports markets are especially important because they helped drive July’s record and often sit closest to traditional betting products.

Clear federal rules could support consistent nationwide access, while state-by-state restrictions could fragment liquidity. Platforms also need strong controls for insider information, manipulation, sanctions and customer eligibility, regardless of which regulator ultimately prevails.

What to watch after the World Cup

August data will show how much of July’s activity was retained. The key indicators are total volume, open interest, active traders and concentration among the largest contracts. A smaller headline total could still be constructive if activity broadens across economics, politics, technology and other categories.

Venue-level market share will also matter. Continued growth at Polymarket US would suggest that users are adopting the domestic product, while recovery on the main platform would show renewed international demand. Kalshi’s ability to maintain liquidity without a global sports final will be the largest test of the combined figure.

The $50.6 billion prediction market volume record confirms that event contracts can support mainstream-scale turnover. It does not yet prove that July’s level is sustainable. Falling open interest and uneven venue performance point to a market that is large, event-sensitive and still concentrated, with post-tournament retention now the most important measure.
