What Is the Ethereum Classic Halving?

The event commonly called the “Ethereum Classic halving” is technically a block reward reduction, rather than a traditional halving.

Under Ethereum Classic’s monetary policy, the block reward decreases by 20% after every 5 million blocks. The ETC community calls this event the Fifthening because one-fifth of the previous block reward is removed.

At the next Fifthening, Ethereum Classic will move from Era 6 to Era 7. The standard block reward will decrease from 1.6384 ETC to 1.31072 ETC per block.

The countdown above estimates the date and time from the current Ethereum Classic block height and recent average block-production time. The exact date may move because the reduction is triggered by a block number, not by a fixed calendar date.

How Does the Ethereum Classic Reward Reduction Work?

Ethereum Classic is a Proof-of-Work blockchain. Miners use computing equipment to process transactions, produce new blocks and secure the network. When a miner produces a valid block, the miner receives newly issued ETC through the block reward, together with eligible transaction fees. Ethereum Classic’s monetary policy is defined by ECIP-1017, also known as the 5M20 emission schedule:
  • Each reward era lasts 5 million blocks.
  • The standard block reward is multiplied by 0.8 at every new era.
  • Each reduction decreases the reward by 20%.
  • A new era occurs approximately every two to two-and-a-half years.
Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum Classic does not cut its reward in half during each event. Its smaller but more frequent reductions create a gradual decline in new ETC issuance.

Ethereum Classic Reward Reduction History

Ethereum Classic Reward Reduction History

Ethereum Classic began with a standard block reward of 5 ETC. Every new 5-million-block era has reduced that reward by 20%.

The block numbers and reward reductions are determined by the protocol. Future calendar dates remain estimates because Ethereum Classic blocks are not always produced at identical intervals.

Is the Ethereum Classic Fifthening the Same as the Bitcoin Halving?

No. Both mechanisms reduce the issuance of new coins, but their schedules are different.

The term “Ethereum Classic halving” is frequently used when searching for the event, but Ethereum Classic reward reduction or Fifthening is technically more accurate.

Will All Ethereum Classic Eventually Be Mined?

Ethereum Classic does not have one final halving at which new issuance suddenly stops. Instead, the block reward continues to decrease by 20% across future 5-million-block eras.

Because each reward is 80% of the previous one, new ETC issuance becomes progressively smaller over time. The total supply therefore approaches its long-term limit gradually rather than reaching it immediately after a single event.

As block rewards decline, transaction fees may become a more important component of miner revenue and the network’s long-term security model.
